Diadora Gara Carbon 3

Diadora Gara Carbon 3 Review: Built for the Big Stage

Every four years, the sporting world comes to a standstill for the FIFA World Cup. For the next 40 days, my television has exactly one purpose: soccer. I've even found a way to combine my love of running and the beautiful game through my World Cup Running Challenge, every goal scored into more miles on my legs. Unfortunately, for the second consecutive World Cup, one of the tournament's traditional powers will be watching from home. Italy, four-time champions and owners of some of the greatest kits ever worn, once again failed to qualify.

While the Azzurri have struggled to recapture past glory on the world stage, Italian brand Diadora has been busy building something of a resurgence of its own in the running world. Enter the Diadora Gara Carbon 3. Diadora's flagship racing shoe arrives with a hefty $320 price tag and promises Italian craftsmanship, a rigorously tested midsole, a supremely comfortable upper, and, unfortunately, a colorway with all the flair of a nil-nil draw. Has Diadora improved upon the Gara Carbon 2 or has it followed the Italian national team into disappointment? Let's find out.

THE DEEP DIVE

Is this shoe for you?

The Gara Carbon 3 is for runners looking for a stable race-day shoe and don't mind a narrower forefoot fit. It may not be the absolute fastest supershoe on the market, but few match the level of craftsmanship and versatility on offer here. At $320, it's undeniably expensive, and you'll want to get your money's worth. Fortunately, the durability and longevity of the Gara Carbon 3 help soften the blow to your wallet, especially compared to supershoes that feel past their prime after a handful of races.

THE WRAP UP

Much like the Italian national team, the Diadora Gara Carbon 3 won't be the first name most runners mention when talking about the biggest players at the World Cup. Unlike the Azzurri, though, Diadora continues to trend in the right direction. The Gara Carbon 3 refines what made the previous version so easy to recommend, pairing a stable, comfortable ride with improved durability and craftsmanship that few supershoes can match. The $320 price tag and narrower forefoot won't be for everyone. And it may not be the outright fastest option on race day, but not every team needs a superstar to make an impact. The Gara Carbon 3 may not win the World Cup of supershoes, but it has more than earned its spot.
