X Brain, Butterfly, Turbo Bumblebee, Black Mamba. If you did not have one of these yo-yos in the late 90s, what were you even doing? Fortunately, I managed to acquire all but the Turbo Bumblebee. Looking at eBay now, that may need to change. My middle school was completely overrun by yo-yos. Recess was spent walking the dog, building Eiffel Towers, and rocking the baby. Friendships were tested over hesitation battles to see whose yo-yo could spin the longest before retrieval. Eventually, they got banned because, apparently, allowing kids to have high-speed spinning objects at school was not the best idea.
That era came back to mind while testing the Li-Ning Red Hare 9 Ultra. Loud colors, flashy tech, and a ride that feels more focused on fun than playing it safe. Li-Ning might not be a household name in the States, but globally, they’re already a major player, even landing on the feet of the winner of the 2025 Seville Marathon. Now their lineup has made its way onto Amazon, led by the Red Hare 9 Ultra: a max stack trainer with top-end tech and styling at a moderate price. On paper, it sounds like a breakout daily trainer, but does it actually deliver once the miles start adding up? Let’s find out.

THE DEEP DIVE
Is this shoe for you?
If you enjoy a highly energetic ride with plenty of bounce and don’t mind a slightly squirrely feel at times, the Red Hare 9 Ultra is a solid choice. The fit leans narrower, so it will work best for runners without wide feet or major stability needs. For the right runner, this is a versatile max stack trainer that can handle everything from daily miles to long runs with marathon pace efforts mixed in. At $150, it packs a big punch underfoot that is accessible for a majority of runners.
THE WRAP UP
The Red Hare 9 Ultra combines premium materials, a highly energetic ride, and standout styling at a price that undercuts a lot of competitors in the max stack space. The ride can get unstable at times, especially for runners with stability needs, but when the shoe settles into rhythm, it is a genuinely fun experience. For runners chasing bounce, cushion, and something that feels a little different from the usual lineup of daily trainers, the Red Hare 9 Ultra ends up being one of the more interesting surprises I’ve tested this year.
