Hoka Mafate X Review: Tall Order for the Trails

I get embarrassed easily. It’s been that way for as long as I can remember. I even feel secondhand embarrassment at a level most people can’t quite believe. So, during the second half of my oldest’s last soccer game, it was only fitting that I found myself living a moment straight out of a blooper reel.

Coaching from the sidelines, an ill-struck ball came my way. I quickly went to pass it back for a throw-in, but as I turned to jog to my spot, I was taken out by a small cardboard sign. As I fell, what felt like in slow motion, I could feel the heat rush to my face and hear the gasps from the parents across the field. A quick roll and pop back to my feet drew cheers and laughter, but all I wanted to do was disappear.

A few people even complimented how “athletic” I looked as I tucked and rolled, though I’m pretty sure they were just being nice. I took the chance, as most runners would, to mention that I’m a runner and have tripped on enough roots and rocks to know how to fall and recover quickly. Trail running meets everyday life. Moments like that remind me why a little extra traction and stability can go a long way. Which brings me to Hoka’s latest trail shoe, the Mafate X.

The Mafate X makes a bold first impression. It comes loaded with an ultra-high stack, a carbon plate, and 3.5 mm lugs, all pointing toward a design meant to go the distance. On paper, it looks ready to handle whatever the trail throws at it. But specs only tell part of the story. How does it actually perform once you leave the road behind? Let’s find out.

IS THIS SHOE FOR YOU?

There’s no doubt the Mafate X was built with the ultra runner in mind, but I wouldn’t limit it to just those taking on extreme distances. It’s a great option for anyone who wants maximum cushioning underfoot without sacrificing stability. The higher price tag may turn some runners away, but for those willing to invest, the Mafate X could be a reliable and capable trail companion.

WRAP UP

The Mafate X is a big swing from Hoka and mostly hits the mark. It delivers the kind of comfort and protection you want when the miles stretch long, with enough stability to keep things controlled on uneven terrain. The weight is noticeable but manageable, and while it won’t be everyone’s first choice for quicker efforts, it shines when the focus is on lasting comfort over long distances. For runners who want max cushion and a steady ride, the Mafate X gets the job done.

Disclosure: Hoka provided the shoes for review free of charge, but all opinions are my own. They had no input or review of this write-up before it was published.
