When I think of Altra Running, three things come to mind: zero drop midsole, foot shaped upper, and cult (half joking). In 2023, Altra made waves in the running world by introducing the AltraFWD Experience, a 4mm drop shoe. Though ruffling the feathers of Altra purists (see previous cult comment), this introduction has opened the brand up to a plethora of runners not suited to zero drop.
For 2024, the company has released a full line of 4mm drop shoes. The Altra Experience Flow is the neutral low drop offering from the company known for zero drop. Formerly known as the AltraFWD Experience, the shoe remains unchanged outside of an updated upper. But does a rebrand and added drop equal a quality daily trainer? Let’s get into it.

IS THIS SHOE FOR YOU?
If you’ve been curious about Altra, but aren’t ready to jump into zero-drop shoes, the Experience Flow is a great choice. It’s a solid daily trainer that can handle hundreds of miles, making it perfect for long-term use. Plus, at $140, it offers fantastic value, giving new runners a durable and comfortable shoe without breaking the bank.
WRAP UP
The shoe, formerly known as AltraFWD Experience, is a reputable daily trainer. Its engineered mesh upper offers excellent breathability, even in high humidity, while maintaining comfort. The midsole features a 4mm drop and a rocker shape, delivering a responsive ride, though it falls short of the premium feel of EGO foam. The durable outsole, unchanged from the predecessor, continues to provide reliable grip and longevity. While the long laces and the midsole’s outdated feel are minor drawbacks, the Experience Flow is a solid choice for runners new to Altra or those seeking a durable, high-performing shoe for extensive mileage, all at an accessible price point of $140.
The Experience Flow is available now at Run N Tri Mobile. Aaron and staff provide a premier fitting process that includes proper measurement of the length and width of your feet, arch, and leg axis. A gait analysis is performed to identify pronation or lack thereof and pressure points. In addition, an interview is conducted to determine the best type of shoe for your needs and goals.
So stop by Run N Tri Mobile so they can put you in Altra’s newest low drop offering or one of the nine other brands carried in the shop.
